From a cute, chubby, shy little boy playing in his mother’s and sister’s shadows on the Caribbean island paradise of Tobago, we have seen Sandhurst grow to carry costumes twice and three times his size in our annual carnival celebrations, and we now hold our breaths as he wows the world with his realness, with his passion, with his joie de vie on Bravo’s Make Me Supermodel 2……he HAS grown up!!!
No longer the shy, chubby little boy who always wanted to be a model but couldn’t work up the courage, Sandhurst now walks tall and proud, totally exploiting his dance sculpted body on runways and TV screens across the US and beyond.
CFSTYLE sat with Mr. Miggins after Sunday evening’s Fashion Week Trinidad and Tobago showing, to get into his head, and get some insight. Here’s what he had to say:
CFSTLYE: WHY modelling? How did you get into it?
SM: I always wanted to model, but never had the courage to do it until I read the book “The Secret”. Then my sister Devonne – oh man..she believes in me so much, and always pushes me because of that – she called me last year and said “ We’re going to Trinidad Fashion Week, and we’re going to print you cards, and we’re gonna hand them out to all the designers”.
We did that. We gave out to Peter Elias, and The Cloth, and a whole bunch of people, but that wasn’t what did it for me. What happened was that Diane Hunt spotted me sitting in the audience and came up and asked me if I would model for her collection. Devonne and I went home and screamed and laughed and jumped all over the house!
CFSTYLE: So I read in a recent interview that you went off to Europe a short while aback…tell us about that.
SM: I had a free ticket to come home for Carnival last year, but I couldn’t get a costume, and I thought, ”There’s no point going home for carnival if I have no costume”. So like a week before I left, I decided to take that $500 vouher and use it to go to Europe. Besides Make Me a Supermodel, that has been the biggest experience of my life!
I did some growing up, I met some amazing people, I went from England to Paris by train, stayed in hostels, took the bus, it was just amazing.
I see my future. And I don’t mean that I have a crystal ball or anything, but I see where I am going; how my life is gonna be. And I KNEW that this would be the last time I could do it like this -the last time I would tour Europe as a student!
The next time I go to Europe, people will PAY for me to be there! I WILL be in Fashion Week! I WILL walk runways in France and in Milan!
CFSTYLE: Ok..so what’s next?
SM: Well, in a short while we’ll know who won Make Me a Supermodel, and win Iose or draw, I am moving to New York and I WILL be a supermodel! Either way, first, second or third, I’mma get a contract, and I’m going to act, and I’m going to be what I wanted to be when I was 5 years old: happy, no worries, enjoying my life!
