In 2008 the New Oxford American Dictionary made a new addition to its tome. This word was also on the shortlist for this dictionary’s Word of the Year award.
What does this word have to do with fashion? Well, a “frugalista” is “a person who lives a frugal lifestyle but stays fashionable and healthy by swapping clothes, buying secondhand, growing own produce, etc.”
Currently there are many websites and stores that cater to frugalistas. www.gilt.com hosts daily sales for the premier fashion designers. Ross, TJ MAXX, and Marshalls also provide designer clothing at very low prices.
Ebay, the online auction site also provides the opportunity to bid on vintage clothing and designer clothing. Bluefly.com also provides premier clothing at discount prices.
The recession has made some of us re-prioritize and help us to focus on what is important in life. Still, fashion is important. Good fashion can still be affordable if frugalistas know where to shop. This remains important as wearing the right clothing to a job interview or a networking activity can lead to obtaining a new job or a new job lead.
