We are constantly being fed a live stream on every media platform of the destruction that has occurred in Haiti based on the 7.0 magnitude earthquake and the subsequent aftershocks that struck the country on the 12th of January.
The Image of the Tshirt by DoubleTake says it all…The Caribbean fashion community is mounting its own initiatives in this regard to help Haiti.
There are different initiatives being mounted across the region and these are some that we have highlighted below. In addition there are specific items being requested and UPS is shipping anything under 50lbs for free to Haiti. You can send food clothes or shoes, American Airlines is taking doctors and nurses to Haiti for free. Please call 212-697-9767. Spread the word…Red Cross needs Creole speaking volunteers for a 24hr phone bank. Call Mr. Wilfrid @ 1-868-305-776-6900 ASAP
In Trinidad this message went out “All stakeholders of the artistic/fashion community interested in assisting HAITI, a meeting is carded for Friday 15th Jan, 6.30pm at Drink Bar to discuss a plan of action. Persons attending are asked to walk with a donation of $100.00.”
Here is a message from Toni Thorne of Barbados of BouiK seeking to mobilize the members of her Martha Smile Initative on Facebook”
“You did not join this group solely to make a difference to this cause but to make your footstep of positivity on humanity and mankind.
My great grandmother always said “I cried because I had no shoes until I saw the man without any feet”. As a child it could never really be rationalised….but with age should come maturity and intellectual development.
We want Nikes, blackberries, Gucci, Prada, Tory Burch, Call of Duty, Bayonetta…..we all want something fickle. I’m guilty as charged!
For a moment however, lets take one minute off of self-consumption and focus on a reality which may not be ours but could’ve been. A reality which is currently faced by our brothers and sisters in Haiti as you read these very words.
First imagine living here:
A place with one of the highest HIV and AIDS rates, one of the poorest in the world, a low literacy rate, unexplainable crime and corruption…..not soo bad right?
OK, let us callously add a 7.0 earthquake and five aftershocks all said to be approximately 5.0 on the scale; raise the death toll to 100 000; destroy the main prison…and in fact, let’s have all the prisoners escape. Murderers, rapists all freely roaming and looting! Hope vanishes with every tear shed from these people’s faces. Vacant eyes stare into what we would refer to as the ‘future’. Body after body after body after body. HELL approaches as the sun goes down.
Mothers whisper words of reassurance to Haitian new born babies, many of whom if they could rationalise may wish they were never born.
In this group we desist from saying someone is an “HIV Victim” because the use of the word “victim” takes away all hope. Would you have hope if you were currently in Haiti?
Lets make a difference. Find some way to donate to our family in Haiti. Food, money, clothes…whatever you have to offer GIVE.
Have Hope…Give Faith…JOY WILL COME IN THE MORNING.
How are You helping ??
