CFSTYLE.com talks to designer Christian Boucaud about her collection for Fashion Week Trinidad and Tobago 2009. She will be presenting on Sunday her Swim wear and Resort line. Look out for it.
1. Where do you get your inspiration for design?
Firstly I started designing at a young age and so I got most of my inspiration from my mother and my grandparents. Actually my first collection was inspired by my grandfather and all the stories he told me of his difficult life. But, over the years, my inspiration evolved and frankly it comes from anything. This year for example, the inspiration for my collection came from purity and innocence two topics I was exploring with my form four Literature class.
2. Where in the world have your designs been featured?
I have done work in Trinidad only however, this year and early next year I am expected to do some work in the US.
3. What advice do you have for young designers?
Oh! A lot firstly, they must understand that the road is long, there are many disappointments but you have to be the best that you can be keeping in mind your dreams. Secondly, don’t become disenchanted being a young designer it is one of the things you must endure there were many times I felt like giving up- hence UWI and teaching – because of experiences within the industry but you must keep your focus as soon as you realize that you are ready to give up .
4. If you were not a designer, what career would you follow?
I must say I love designing but I think I was going to be a surgeon. (lol)
5. What is special about Caribbean fashion?
The Caribbean history is unique. Many scholars tried to define the Caribbean but they were in most cases unsuccessful because of out uniqueness. Like the history of the Caribbean, I think that our fashion too is unique since we are sometimes inspired by our different heritage and foundation.
6. Do you have a mentor? Who has guided you along the way?
Of course two my mother Caroline Phillip and Mr. Christopher Nathan of Coco Velvet
7. Whom do you admire most in international fashion?
8. What is the difference between fashion and style?
I think that fashion deals with the styles of a given time according to culture. Most times fashion also means the appearance of clothing and the ideas. On the other hand I think style is the execution
9. What do you expect to come out of FWTT?
For me it is not really an expectation but it is the great opportunity of having the public view my newest collection.
