We talk to Toni Thorne who is nominated in the category of Upcoming Designer.
1. How do you feel about being nominated for a Caribbean Fashion Award?
L – Loyal
A – Assiduous
T – Thankful
E – Encouraged
2. How many years have you been doing fashion design?
BoUiK was established in 2006 after I submitted a business outline for a clothing label and was a winner in a national competition. At that time, I was still pursuing my BSc. In Economics and Accounting and was representing the University of the West Indies.
However, I always used to draw designs for my friends when they attended major events and functions. We never wanted to wear outfits that would be sold by the dozens in Bridgetown.
3. What has been the most memorable moment in your career?
I can’t really highlight one specific moment. I do know that 2007 in Jamaica was a memorable period. Posh Punk knows exactly what I am talking about ;).
4. What are your plans for your career over the next five years?
At present BoUiK specializes in demi-couture, accessories, and swimwear. Within the next five years, I intend to transform BoUiK from a small clothing label to a major fashion company that uses fashion as a medium to effect change and enhance lives and experiences.
5. What would you be doing if not your current profession?
Wow, that’s difficult. As you know, I graduated last year. Presently, I work as a Contracts Coordinator for an oil company and have aspirations of a career in international Trade Law and Global Business Strategy. I intend to go to law school from next year.
When it comes to the arts, I just completed filming a TV drama series that will be showcased throughout the region, I am a dancer and I love running BoUiK. I really can’t say what I think I would have been doing if I weren’t where I am now. I think God has blessed me in that I have accomplished most of my goals at 22. God doesn’t promise that the chapters will be easy but we are assured that by the time we reach the final chapter, it will make sense.
6. Fashion or style? What’s the difference?
Fashion is constantly evolving and can be deemed as frivolous. Style is innate and truly reflects the individual. Personally, I prefer style. Although the two are correlated, I think that you can have style without fashion but never fashion without style.
