Trinidadian photographer Justyn Mayers took a hobby to the next level in 2011 when he made it his profession. He says: ‘I figured that getting paid for doing what I like to do anyway wasn’t a bad idea!’
Having worked with other photographers for further experience, Justyn also hones his skills by teaching himself from a variety of sources and pushing his limits on a practical level. The fact that he enjoys landscape photography more than anything certainly helps when he tests his talent by situating himself in a range of environments.
Regionally, he cites Laura Ferreira, Yaisa Tangwell and Joseph Francis-Lau as inspiration. He is also a fan of international photographers Karl Taylor, Naom Chen and Dave Hill.
According to Justyn, planning is the most important part of a photo shoot. He compares it to painting, stating ‘… if you don’t have paints, brushes and a canvas, there is no painting.’ He stands by the belief that research and sticking to a schedule are key to achieving great results.
When it comes to the Caribbean, Justyn is most proud of the intertwined cultures.
‘Our art, music, food, Carnival and the way we entertain is unique no matter where we are in the world. That’s something to be proud of.’
