The CFstyle Review: NIQ Fashion

[Trinidad] On Sunday 10th July, designer Nick Salloum launched the latest NIQ Fashion Summer 2011 collection in the trendy setting of Drink! Wine Bar in Woodbrook, Port-of-Spain.

Best described as a fresh take on urban and streetwear, NIQ Fashion may be one of the smaller ‘underground’ brands on the fashion scene, but makes a significant contribution nonetheless. Graphic prints, bright colours and most of all wearable, Nick Salloum has tapped into the younger local fashion scene with great success thus far. He acknowledges that his design aesthetic may not fit into the ‘inner circle’ of runway fashion in the country, but is absolutely comfortable with showing off his talents and his work in a way that complements the NIQ Fashion manifesto, so to speak.

And what better way than an intimate setting full of music and energy where the models mingle with guests, wearing NIQ clothing?
The small but concise showing, with accessories by Jamilia Alexander of VICE VERSA, included a selection of uber-cute shorts for the ladies in some great colours such as yellow and purple – perfect to wear with a plain ribbed vest and lace-up flats during the day or to dress up with a blazer and heels, not forgetting the equally cute clutch, at night. The CFstyle favourite had to be the black-and-white pair of shorts for the ladies – worn by Hannah Samuel – which fits right in with this year’s rising monochrome trend.

The guys were not left behind, with well-constructed, perfectly fitted board shorts that also echoed the monochrome trend with a bit of colour thrown in. Not to forget the signature printed tees and vests, for both male and female, which concluded the short but energetic showcase.

If you happen to be looking for wearable, comfortable, fun and youthful local fashion without all the pomp and stance, then NIQ Fashion may be just the thing for you!
