Sonia Joseph caught our eye on the runway of the CAFD @ UTT Designer Critic Awards show, so we had to follow up and find out more about this elegant beauty.
Age: 22 years
Sonia is relatively new to the modeling scene. She has participated in a fashion show at the University of the West Indies (UWI) called Enigma and was a make-up portfolio model for friends in the profession. Otherwise, she was a delegate for the UWI beauty pageant known as Miss UWI-verse.
Having grown up a true tomboy, surrounded by her brother and his friends, few would have ever pegged Sonia to be the modeling type. However, with encouragement growing for her to give it a try, she became more convinced that she had as much to offer as other girls in the industry. Now, despite having shied away from attention as a little girl, she loves having all eyes on her when she walks a runway.
‘I can’t explain it, but when I’m modeling, all the shyness disappears,’ she says.
More than just a pretty face, Sonia enjoys playing netball and participating on several committees, such as the Trinidad and Tobago Students’ Association (TTSA) as the Administrative Assistant and Communications Officer. Academically, she is just as ambitious, having recently completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies with a minor in Psychology. She can now focus on modeling whilst awaiting results later on this year.
And what does Sonia think about Caribbean fashion?
‘I’m going to be really honest here. I used to always say that people in the Caribbean are blind followers when it comes to fashion, but over time I’ve seen our fashion sense evolving. We still emulate American and European styles but add our own flavour to it, which I believe is due to the love of our culture. Trinidadians are so patriotic and to me our designs always portray how much love and passion we have for that culture.’
CFstyle.com says welcome to Sonia Joseph… we look forward to seeing more from you!
