A new series by CFSTYLE

The style and originality designers embed into simple cloth and materials, the way they transform mere cloth into artistic pieces. From handbags, to jewelry, to hairstyles, to shoes, to clothing… to me, only one word seems to sum it all up…”fashion”. Whether in the office, in the classroom even in politics (see Michelle Obama) fashion is everywhere and in everything, ever notice how nature has this way of mixing and matching colours?
I adore everything about fashion, clothes, shoes, jewelry, cosmetics, dressing up, posing for pictures, actually, given the chance, I would live, sleep, eat and breathe fashion. As cliché as it may sound, fashion is really about being comfortable with yourself and your own style but let’s be practical, sometimes your “own style” by itself just doesn’t always work. I was taught, from an early age, to dress to suit your body’s shape and I keep this in mind when making certain fashion decisions. That’s how fashion icons attain their titles; they know what looks good and what just doesn’t work for them.
As the Caribbean is becoming more and more aware of the fashion world, we hear words like “swagger” and “swanky” being used to describe personal style, we see pieces from Claudia Peagus and Ecliff Elie on runways at Fashion Week and I can’t help but be inspired. Models like LaToya Woods and Kai Anthony Leggard, who have made it far in the local fashion industry and the surfacing of numerous fashion and modeling agencies that give people the opportunity to be exposed to the fashion world, is all evidence of something far greater than just an industry.
From the first time I saw Naomi Campbell on television, murdering a catwalk with her signature walk, to seeing Zac Posen’s sophisticated yet original designs, it was obvious to me that fashion wasn’t just an industry, but an empire. What does fashion mean to me? Uniqueness, passion, style, sophistication, originality, innovation and making statements. Fashion isn’t a hobby…it’s a lifestyle.
